As a public foundation, we pursue what Japan must do, and what only Japan can do, for the generations ahead. In an age of constant change, we guard the values that must not change. Across this turbulent era, Japan’s proud traditions—arts, crafts, heritage, industry, and agriculture—are quietly fading. Times shift. People’s minds shift. How do we adapt without losing essence? How do we rediscover value in what remains? If we do not preserve what is precious now, the future will lose it forever. Before it reaches zero, we must keep it, break it open, and let it evolve—守・破・離. Through this foundation, we will protect and elevate the cultural soul of Japan.

Once, this land held more than 70,000 villages—each with its own climate, customs, traditions, and human stories. Today, only 1,718 municipalities remain, yet their memories, cultures, and rhythms still breathe beneath the surface.
In a globalizing world, we must rediscover the beauty of the local. In an age of constant change, we must reclaim the values that do not change. Let us wander Japan. Let us play, explore, and awaken—to the brilliance of this land, to the coexistence of people and nature, to the joy that stirs the heart. Japan Re-Shine. A nation where culture and nature live together in harmony. Where curiosity dances, and excitement ripples like sunlight on water. Let us know Japan more deeply. Let us make Japan stronger, richer, and full of love once again. Let us build a place where everlasting joy can be shared. 環太平洋文明。縄文＆弥生時代。建国2600年以上を誇り、世界一長い天皇朝廷を築く。現在は３つの大合併を経て1718の市町村と47の都道府県になってしまっているが、過去には7万を超える町村があった。そこにはそれぞれの文化、気候、環境、伝統、生活様式、人間関係が残っている。グローバルな世界に、ローカルな楽しみを。そんな、変わりゆく時代に変わらぬ価値を見出してみようではないか。日本をとことん游んでみようではないか。

3. Revival of a Century “Let’s Play Japan” – ニッポンと游ぼう “世紀の大イベントを復興！“

“Nippon no Yū – Playing Japan with the Soul” A revival born from Kyoto, the ancient capital of hospitality and grace. In Kyoto—the old capital where omotenashi, shitsurai, and furumai still breathe in every gesture—a unique celebration once flourished: “Let’s Play Japan.” A feast where tradition and innovation met, beloved by people around the world. From its start in 1994, marking 1,200 years since the Heian relocation, to its final 20th edition in 2013, it remained a testament to Japan’s cultural depth.
古都・京都に息づく「もてなし」「しつらい」「ふるまい」の精神を体現し、他に類のない伝統と 革新の供宴として、広く海外からも大きな期待を寄せられる「にっぽんと遊ぼう」。日本文化の継承と発展という大きな志のもとに、この京都ならではの独自の催しは、平安遷都千二百年を迎えた1994年よりスタート。2013年にその最終の宴、第20回にて幕を閉じました。


Now, it returns—reborn as “Nippon no Yū – Japan Reimagined.” A new era begins, a project to let Japan shine once more.
「にっぽんと遊ぼう」。改め、「日本ノ游 – ニッポンと游ぶ」を復活。そして新しい時代に向けて、再輝させるプロジェクト始動。

Asobi – play of the material and physical world. Asobu（游ぶ） – play that shakes the soul, that drifts freely where the heart leads. Let us risk our lives in joyful exploration. Let us find companions who share life itself. Let us live beyond rules—and if rules must exist, let us create them ourselves. It is always the outsiders, the fools, and the youth who change the world.
So let us escape the automatic machinery of modern life. Let us wander Japan, wander the Earth, wander the mind. Let each of us become ten colors in one body. Let us live in thrilling excitement—freely, infinitely.

What is Japan? Everyone asks this question at least once in their life. Different answers, different perspectives —yet not a single one is wrong. The Japan you discover is already a true Japan. To the West, it is the far edge of the East. To Africa or the Americas, it was once an unknown world. And yet, paradoxically, Japan stands as one of the world’s quiet centers. A nation that embraces both nationalism and globalism, balancing them with a rare, deliberate grace. Japan is a land shaped by impermanence. Typhoons, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes —Nature tests us relentlessly. But our ancestors chose not to resist it, they revered it, adapted to it, and lived with it. From that dialogue with nature emerged one of Japan’s greatest gifts to humanity: “The Way” — the philosophy of michi. The Way of Tea. The Way of the Sword. The Way of Incense. The Way of Form. A culture in which every action hides a spirit, a beauty, a discipline. Deep within the Japanese psyche lies the sense of living as children of the gods — ujiko. Not above, not below, but standing side-by-side in the circle of Wa, harmony. The four seasons change their faces every year, and culture evolves with the rhythm of nature. Even the cicadas — whose sound foreigners often find loud —become to the Japanese mind an echo of summer, a memory, a feeling. Above all, Japan is a people who hold a heart that chooses not to fight. A heart that leans toward sharing rather than taking, toward harmony rather than dominance. In that way, we resemble the Hobbits of The Lord of the Rings: quiet, unassuming, yet profoundly resilient. In the end, what is Japan? It is—A civilization that learns from nature, connects through the heart,
and chooses to live through empathy and harmony. A different model for humanity’s future.

日本とは…？

を、考えたことが一度はあるだろう…違いは違えど、間違いなんて一つもない。
あなたが出した答えが答え。

西洋にとっては東の最果て、アフリカ大陸や米大陸にとっては未知の国。ただ一つ確実に言えることは、世界の中心であるということ。ナショナリズムを確立しつつ、グローバリズムと肩を並べる。

天然の無常…台風があり、地震があり、津波があり、そして世界の7％を占める活火山がある。それでも、先祖は自然を崇拝し、自然と共に生きてきた。『ニッポンを游ぶ…』大切なのは、分かち合える家族、友人、仲間の存在。
素晴らしい時間を、素晴らしい空間の中で。

では、日本とは…？そう…「道 – the way」の概念がある。世界からみても似通よらない珍しい和独特の文化がある。

精神のどこかに神の子(氏子)という意味合いを持つ種族。
それは、均等・平等の人間関係像を創り出す。毎年様変わりする四季があり、そこに合わせた文化が定着している。

外国人にはうるさい蝉の鳴き声すら、日本人の左脳を介して、どこか夏の風物詩として想いを馳せる。
そう…我々は戦わない心を持ち、分かち合う概念を持っている。 どこか、Lord of the ringsのホビットが転写されているかのように…
